The aim is to give the opportunity of study to those children who cannot go to school because of family poverty. There are over 800 children sponsored at the moment (March 2000), in Belgium, Holland, Japan, Italy, the UK and other countries. The project works with 9 schools, 5 of which have been opened by IIMC in remote villages. Sponsored children are provided with books, uniforms, pens, shoes, school bags, winter clothes, school fees, midday food and other materials necessary for their education. Representatives in each supporting country will provide details as to the cost of child sponsorship. (Some of this money finances the building and maintenance, including teachers salaries, of IIMC Schools) It is hoped to create one new school each year. Sponsors receive details of family history, living conditions and a photo. Twice a year the education co-ordinator, Mrs Barnali Brahmochary, sends news about the child's life, with a school report each year. Sponsors can write to their child, sometimes receiving get drawings or letters, depending on the childs age. Good contact is encouraged. Visitors to Calcutta are most welcome.
