HEALTH PROMOTION

The Health Promotion and Health Education Unit at IIMC

Introduction
The aims of the health education and health promotion team at IIMC is to improve the health status and understanding of general and reproductive health of the village men and women, in the various remote areas of 24-Parganas South. We believe, when people will be educated, and healthy lifestyles are demonstrated, that they can promote their health themselves. We have an ancient alternative health system, and some of these practices are very dangerous and harmful. Our main work to dispel any wrong understanding about health, warn against dangerous taboos and give motivation through mother awareness programmes, drama presentations and one-to-one counselling. Many discrete programmes are used in combination with one another to produce positive changes in health behaviours. In addition dai training has recently been commenced at IIMC's headquarters, which is designed to make the birth of her child safer for all women. Please see descriptions of the various discrete programmes below. Please feel free to speak to any member of this unit at IIMC for further information.

Mother awareness Programme
Unfortunately our village women are neglected and opposed by the various religions and dominant groups in our society. From the very beginning they suffer from both harmful rituals and superstition. To uplift their life status, to nourish their health hygiene and to fight against dowry system and social injustice our H E and HP unit is working with suffering and helpless women in the different places of Hogolkuria, Patrapara, D-chak, Dophakhali, Dakshin Bonhoogly, Chakberia, Simultala, Kadharhat, Shreekhanda, Narendrapur, Jata and other places. Total awareness programme from October 1999 to March 2000 is 180 and the total number of persons benefitting in this time is 2405.

Ante-Natal care Programme :

In India 80% women are living in the village, where there is no qualified doctor, no communication and no treatment facilities. IIMC is trying to reach and share their problems through the mobile medical team and the HE and HP unit. They identify and take special care about the pregnant mother who are suffering and neglected by their family and also society. IIMC is regularly giving health messages and support of medicine, nutritious food, health check-up and necessary other test through the reproduction child health care programme. The sponsored mother scheme has been successful in ensuring that the pregnant mother has received vital nutrients, support and understanding during and shortly after her pregnancy.
Pre-cancer detection Study  :
Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital is a famous and well known cancer research institution Therefore IIMC in collaboration with hospital personnel is running a pre-cancer detection camp at the IIMC's indoor center for the suffering and uncared for women of society. Unfortunately our women are neglected and uncared by their family and society so the HE and HP unit has taken this kind of initiation to the helpless women.
In the last year IIMC organised 6 camps, where 67 women were cared for, and 6 women were identified with cancer. Follow-up care and understanding were naturally given to each woman.
