IRRIGATION PROJECT AT DUKHERPOLE

In the month of May the irrigation project was provided water supply to the farmer nearby the field of the project at Dukherpole. Due to dry season the surface of water level was falling down. So the supplying of water was very difficult and the farmers were working with difficulties. The situation made to set the pump 6 feet deep from its normal position and able to get water. But the cultivation in this season was not very successful. The farmers were deposited a partial amount of money before the session. The rest of money was not recovered for damage of crops due to heavy dry session. The project was cultivated in the winter season. In December 1999 it was harvesting time and 600 Kg paddy was produced which is being used for IIMC Indoor residential patients.
In the month of July the project initiated again with the advent of rainy season. The farmers cultivated the land without supplying water from the pump. The crops was very fertile and the cultivation was very much successful. In addition many banana trees were in this session and the plants are growing well with their fruits. Till January 2000 the fisiculture was going on though it is not improving as a whole.

The power tiller was used for cultivating other land from the month of August and in Septer'99 it was working in full fledge. From October to December the use of power tiller not functioning well because of un-season for the purpose.

Purbajata Education, irrigation & safe drinking water supply programme.


Introduction of the area
:

Purbo Jata is a village under Mathurapur - II Block of South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. The villages are at the verge of " Sundar Ban".

Sundarban, the delta of Ganges has been given the status of a special area because of its inaccessibility, natural disasters and abysmal poverty ( mostly monocroped ).

Purbo- Jata and six other villages around namely Purba Moyrapara, Pachim Moyrapara, Hatha Gheri, Tarack Mandir Gheri, Purba Pachim, Muslimpara, Dakhin Kangir Gheri & Utter Boradanagore, covering an area of 20 Sq. K.M with a population of 20,000 people. Agricultural fields are mostly mono-crops. While 90% of the population depends on cultivation 10% depends on fishing. More than 2/3 of the population live below the poverty line ( Poverty line is 7.5 USD approximate  per month / head )

In this population of 20000 people there are 3 primary schools in which the number of students are 1102 where as the number of teachers are 8 ( 138:1 ) There is no Secondary school.

The situation of drinking water and Sanitation are absolutely poor. The People have no idea of hygiene. At present there are 1 tube well per 1100 people although as per government declaration there should be 1 tube well per 300 people. Moreover most of the tube well there, are about 400 /450 feet deep, so they may become dry at any moment.
So, secondary education, safe drinking programme and irrigation project are urgent and kind need for the community. In the sense IIMC has started education and education project and trying to implement of drinking water project in different sources.

Sewing Unit (Production of Uniform)


One Pico machine (for special finishing on the urge of Sari ) has been purchased in May. 44 Uniforms has been produced in the month of May for the sponsored students. Measurement had been done for 143 students for their uniforms. In the month of August and September 47 & 39 uniforms have been produced for our sponsored students. Apart from this the unit was given some order for dress material like screen, shirt, frock, etc In June sewing unit has made 122 school uniforms. This unit has produced 102 school uniforms in July. From August to March the production was as usual. In total 1400 uniforms had  made for this year.  Apart from this more 15 uniforms were made for Banamalipur School. 
It is a pleasure to see that the Sewing unit is gradually becoming efficient in their performance.
