Introduction of the area : Purbo Jata is a village under Mathurapur - II Block of South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. The villages are at the verge of " Sundar Ban".
Sundarban, the delta of Ganges has been given the status of a special area because of its inaccessibility, natural disasters and abysmal poverty ( mostly monocroped ).
Purbo- Jata and six other villages around namely Purba Moyrapara, Pachim Moyrapara, Hatha Gheri, Tarack Mandir Gheri, Purba Pachim, Muslimpara, Dakhin Kangir Gheri & Utter Boradanagore, covering an area of 20 Sq. K.M with a population of 20,000 people. Agricultural fields are mostly mono-crops. While 90% of the population depends on cultivation 10% depends on fishing. More than 2/3 of the population live below the poverty line ( Poverty line is 7.5 USD approximate per month / head )
In this population of 20000 people there are 3 primary schools in which the number of students are 1102 where as the number of teachers are 8 ( 138:1 ) There is no Secondary school.
The situation of drinking water and Sanitation are absolutely poor. The People have no idea of hygiene. At present there are 1 tube well per 1100 people although as per government declaration there should be 1 tube well per 300 people. Moreover most of the tube well there, are about 400 /450 feet deep, so they may become dry at any moment. So, secondary education, safe drinking programme and irrigation project are urgent and kind need for the community. In the sense IIMC has started education and education project and trying to implement of drinking water project in different sources.
